A group of senators who toured Kitui prison have secured release of 15 women who were held over failure failure to pay fines as low as 5,000.
In a facebook post shared by Senator Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi)the leaders had a session with prisoners who shared their heartbreaking predicaments with the legislators .
Sakaja said most of the rumandees have been following up on their cases since 2016 but the wheels of justice were moving so slowly hence denying them freedom .
"Mother with children imprisoned for failure to pay fines as low as 5,000 shillings .I'm glad we were able to secure the release of 15 of them but chief Justice David Maraga and Director of Public prosecution must answer to the state of delay ,in the Justice system ," he said.
The vocal politician said it was illogical to keep someone in prison for months over failure to pay 5,000 shillings yet it costs much more to keep them in prison.
Instead ,Sakaja suggested some of them should be converted into non-custodial sentences.
